The story begins long before modern Budapest. Roman Aquincum once stood in the area of present-day Óbuda, on the frontier of the Roman province of Pannonia. Later centuries brought the medieval Kingdom of Hungary, the Mongol invasion, Ottoman occupation, Habsburg rule, the Austro-Hungarian period, two world wars, the 1956 Revolution and communist rule.
