The Lake Balaton wine tour is the first route in my Discover Hungary Through Its Wines collection of private wine-region experiences from Budapest. The concept is not simply to taste several wines and return to the city. The purpose is to understand where the wines come from and to experience the landscape, people, food and culture surrounding them.
Lake Balaton is an ideal place to begin. The northern shore combines water, volcanic hills, vineyards, historic villages, elegant lakeside towns and some of Hungary’s most atmospheric wine terraces.

During the journey, I take care of the driving, route, timing and practical arrangements while sharing stories about Hungary, Lake Balaton, local life, history, food and wine traditions. At the winery, the tasting itself is hosted by the winemaker, owner or a knowledgeable member of the winery team.
This creates a natural combination: I help you understand the wider Hungarian context during the day, while the people who actually make the wine introduce their vineyard, methods and bottles.
There is no large group, no fixed bus schedule and no need for anyone in your party to remain sober for the return journey to Budapest.

A Flexible Itinerary Built Around Your Interests
There is no single version of the perfect Lake Balaton wine day. Some guests want a balanced introduction to the region, combining sightseeing, lunch and one substantial tasting. Others are more interested in wine and would prefer to spend most of the afternoon visiting two different producers.
The standard itinerary includes Tihany, Balatonfüred and one winery experience. This provides a good balance between sightseeing and wine, allowing you to understand both the region and its wines.
A more wine-focused itinerary can include two wineries or wine terraces. Because a proper tasting should never feel rushed, this version may require us to shorten or omit either Tihany or Balatonfüred. In some cases, both sightseeing stops can be reduced to brief panoramic visits so that enough time remains for the wine experiences.
The final program depends on winery availability, seasonal opening hours, your wine interests and how much sightseeing you would like to include. Before confirming the booking, I will explain the available options and help you choose the most realistic and enjoyable route.
Morning Departure from Budapest
The day normally begins at approximately 9:00 with private pickup from your hotel or accommodation in Budapest.
The drive to Szántód usually takes around 1 hour and 15-25 minutes, depending on traffic. As Budapest gradually disappears behind us, the landscape becomes more open and rural, giving us time to talk about Hungary, Lake Balaton and the country’s wine culture.
The journey is not simply empty transportation before the tasting. It is part of the experience and an opportunity to understand the region you are about to visit.
Crossing Lake Balaton by Ferry
At Szántód, we drive onto the ferry with the car and cross Lake Balaton to the Tihany Peninsula.
The crossing is short, but it offers one of the most memorable arrivals at Lake Balaton. You can leave the car during the journey, enjoy the open views, take photographs and watch the hills and abbey of Tihany gradually come closer from across the water.
Because the car travels with us, we can continue directly from the ferry toward Tihany, Balatonfüred and the wine region without organising any additional transportation.
Tihany Peninsula and Abbey Area
In the standard version of the tour, our first main stop is Tihany, one of the most recognisable and historic places around Lake Balaton.
The village stands above the lake, with traditional houses, lavender shops, panoramic viewpoints and the Benedictine Abbey at its centre. The abbey has overlooked Lake Balaton for almost one thousand years and remains one of the region’s defining landmarks.
I introduce the area, explain the main points of interest and suggest the most worthwhile viewpoints before giving you time to explore independently. Tihany is compact, attractive and easy to navigate without needing to follow a guide continuously.
On a wine-focused itinerary with two winery visits, Tihany may be shortened to a panoramic stop or omitted entirely, depending on timing and the locations of the selected wineries.
Balatonfüred and the Tagore Promenade
Balatonfüred is one of the classic towns of Lake Balaton’s northern shore. Its tree-lined Tagore Promenade, historic villas, cafés, boats and seasonal flowers create an elegant lakeside atmosphere.
In the standard itinerary, I show you the main area and give you time to walk independently along the promenade. This can also be a pleasant place for coffee, cake or a short break before lunch and the afternoon tasting.
If two winery or wine terrace visits are planned, Balatonfüred may be shortened or left out. This is not a disadvantage if wine is your main priority. It simply allows the day to focus on the experiences that matter most to you.
Optional Hungarian Countryside Lunch
Before the tasting, we can stop for lunch in a traditional Hungarian countryside restaurant, a local restaurant with views over Lake Balaton or another carefully selected place along the route.
A proper meal is strongly recommended before an afternoon wine tasting. It also adds another regional element to the experience, allowing you to try Hungarian dishes away from the more tourist-focused parts of central Budapest.
Lunch is not included in the tour price, so you remain free to choose from the menu according to your appetite and preferences.
When two winery visits are included, lunch may need to be lighter or more efficiently timed. Some wineries also offer cold plates, cheeses, local meats or other small food pairings as part of the tasting.
One Winery, Two Wine Terraces or a Private Vineyard Experience
The afternoon program can be designed in several different ways. The best option depends on your interests, the season and winery availability.
One Established Winery
The balanced version of the tour includes one substantial winery experience. This may take place at a recognised family estate or a larger producer with a professional tasting room and a structured introduction to the region’s wines.
This option works particularly well if you would like to keep both Tihany and Balatonfüred in the itinerary. There is enough time to enjoy the sightseeing stops, have lunch and still experience the tasting without watching the clock.
Two Wineries or Wine Terraces
Guests who would like to explore the Balaton wine region more deeply can visit two separate wineries or wine terraces.
The two locations can offer contrasting experiences: perhaps one larger, established estate followed by a smaller producer, or two wine terraces with different views, grape varieties and styles.
Because each tasting requires time for introductions, several wines, conversation and food pairings, this version cannot comfortably include the full Tihany and Balatonfüred program as well. One of the sightseeing stops may therefore be shortened or omitted.
The exact price changes according to the tasting fees and route. I will confirm the final program and total cost after checking availability with the selected producers.
A Private Vineyard and Local Experience
Another possibility is a more intimate visit to a privately owned vineyard in the hills near Lake Balaton.
This is not a polished commercial tasting room. It is a personal local experience hosted by people who make their own wine and are proud to share how they work. Depending on the season and the host, the visit may include local fruit, homemade food, cheese, a cold plate and an introduction to Hungarian pálinka alongside the wines.
The atmosphere is informal, warm and genuinely Hungarian. Guests can ask questions, walk through the vineyard, learn how the family makes its wines and enjoy views over the vines and Lake Balaton.
This experience is available by prior arrangement and depends on the host’s schedule, vineyard work and seasonal conditions.
What Kind of Wines Can You Taste?
The exact wines depend on the selected producer, but the Lake Balaton region is particularly well known for white wines shaped by the lake climate, hillside vineyards and, in several areas, volcanic soils.
A tasting may include local or regional varieties, fresh white wines, fuller mineral styles, rosé, sparkling wine and occasionally red wine. The selection changes according to the winery and current vintages.
The purpose is not to taste as many wines as possible. The goal is to understand the producer, the region and the connection between the landscape and the character of the wine.
No previous wine knowledge is required. The tour works equally well for curious beginners and experienced wine lovers who want to discover Hungarian bottles that may not be widely available abroad.
