Yes, but the route needs to be planned well. Esztergom, Visegrád and Szentendre are all located north of Budapest, along or near the Danube, but they are not sitting right next to each other. The order, timing and pace of the day matter.
A relaxed private route usually works best like this:
- Start from Budapest in the morning
- Drive towards the Danube Bend area
- Visit Esztergom Basilica and the riverside viewpoint
- Continue to Visegrád Castle for the famous Danube panorama
- Finish the day in Szentendre with a slow walk, coffee or late lunch
- Return to Budapest in the evening

Why These Three Places Work So Well Together
Esztergom, Visegrád and Szentendre are not just three random stops on a map. Together, they show three very different faces of Hungary.
Esztergom tells the story of the early Hungarian kingdom and the country’s Christian heritage. Visegrád brings you into the world of medieval kings, castle walls and one of the best views of the Danube. Szentendre changes the mood completely: colourful streets, small museums, terraces, artists, souvenir shops and a softer Mediterranean feeling by the river.
That contrast is exactly what makes this route special. In one day, you move from royal and religious history to mountain panoramas and finally to a relaxed riverside town where the pace naturally slows down.
First Stop: Esztergom Basilica and Hungary’s First Capital
Esztergom is one of Hungary’s most important historic towns. It was once the capital of the Hungarian Kingdom and remains a major spiritual centre of the country.
The main landmark is the Esztergom Basilica, the largest church in Hungary. It stands high above the Danube, facing Slovakia on the other side of the river. Even before you enter the building, the position of the Basilica makes an impression: wide steps, massive columns and a view that reminds you how important this place has been for centuries.
Inside, the main church hall can usually be visited freely. The cupola viewpoint, crypt and panorama café may require a separate ticket. If you are comfortable with stairs, the dome climb is worth considering – the view from the top is one of the finest in the region.
A short extra highlight is the Mária Valéria Bridge, which connects Esztergom with Štúrovo, also known in Hungarian as Párkány, across the Slovak border. Even a brief stop or drive across the bridge adds a nice international touch to the day: two countries, one river, and one of the most symbolic views of the Danube Bend.
Second Stop: Visegrád Castle and the Danube Bend Panorama
From Esztergom, the route continues towards Visegrád, also written without accents as Visegrad in many travel searches.
Visegrád is famous for its medieval castle, known as the Fellegvár, or Citadel. The castle sits high above the Danube, and this is where the landscape suddenly opens up. The river curves below, the hills rise around it, and you understand why the Danube Bend is considered one of the most beautiful areas near Budapest.
The castle itself is connected to Hungarian royal history. Visegrád was once an important royal centre, especially during the medieval period. Walking around the fortress walls, exhibitions and viewpoints gives the day a stronger historical layer – not just beautiful scenery, but a real sense of place.

Final Stop: Szentendre Before Returning to Budapest
After the history and panoramas of Esztergom and Visegrád, Szentendre feels lighter, softer and more relaxed.
This small riverside town is known for its baroque houses, narrow streets, colourful facades, churches, galleries and cafés. It has long been loved by artists, and even today it has a slightly Mediterranean atmosphere – not because of the sea, of course, but because of the colours, terraces and the relaxed rhythm of the old town.
Szentendre is usually the perfect final stop because it does not need to be rushed. You can walk slowly, have coffee, enjoy a late lunch, visit a small museum, buy something local, or simply sit by the Danube before heading back to Budapest.
For many guests, Szentendre is the part of the day where everything settles. After basilicas, castles and panoramas, it gives the route a warm and human ending.
Why a Private Car Makes This Day Much Easier
Visiting Esztergom, Visegrád and Szentendre in one day is technically possible in different ways, but comfort makes a big difference.
With public transport, you need to think about train times, bus connections, walking distances, waiting periods and how to move between places that are not always perfectly connected. This can turn a beautiful day into a logistical puzzle.
