A Private Lake Balaton Day Trip with Tamás

Hungary has a rich and fascinating history, and I enjoy showing guests that the country has much more to offer beyond its capital. Lake Balaton is a wonderful example: it combines centuries of history, beautiful scenery, local traditions and the relaxed atmosphere of a region that generations of Hungarians have loved.
During the journey, I take care of the driving, timing and practical details while sharing stories about Hungary, its history, everyday life, food and traditions. In Tihany and Balatonfüred, I introduce the area and give you time to walk around independently, as both places are easy and pleasant to explore. At Szigliget Castle, I walk up with you. The route is straightforward, but it is steep enough that a little encouragement can be useful.

Morning Departure from Budapest
The day usually begins at around 9:00 with private pickup from your hotel or accommodation in Budapest.
The drive from Budapest to Szántód or directly ti Tihany usually takes approximately 1 hour and 15-25 minutes, depending on traffic. As the city gradually disappears behind us, the landscape becomes more open and rural, giving us plenty of time to talk about Hungary, Lake Balaton and the places you will see during the day.
You do not need to study timetables, change trains or organise transportation between different towns around the lake. I take care of the route and practical details, so you can simply enjoy the journey.
Optional Crossing Lake Balaton by Ferry from Szántód to Tihany
At Szántód, we drive onto the ferry together with the car and cross Lake Balaton to the Tihany Peninsula.
The ferry journey is relatively short, but it is already one of the memorable parts of the day. Instead of simply arriving in Tihany by road, you approach the peninsula from the water, with open views across the lake and the hills of the northern shore ahead of you.
You can leave the car during the crossing, enjoy the fresh air, take photographs and watch the Tihany Peninsula gradually come closer. It is a relaxing and scenic introduction to Lake Balaton before the sightseeing part of the day begins.
Ferry Price: ~EUR 18 in case of two passengers
Tihany Peninsula, Abbey and Lake Views

Tihany sits high above the water, with traditional village houses, small local shops, quiet streets and panoramic viewpoints overlooking the lake. At the centre of the village stands the famous Benedictine Abbey, which has watched over Lake Balaton for almost one thousand years.
Before you begin exploring, I introduce the main sights, explain the layout of the village and suggest the most worthwhile viewpoints and streets. Tihany is compact and easy to navigate, so you can then enjoy your walk independently without needing to follow a guide from one stop to another.
The abbey area offers one of the classic views of the region. From here, you can see the wide surface of Lake Balaton, the surrounding hills and the opposite shore in the distance.
Tihany is also closely connected with lavender. Depending on the season, you can browse small shops selling lavender products and other locally inspired gifts while walking through the village.
There is no need to rush. You have time to enjoy the atmosphere, take photographs, visit the abbey area and explore the most attractive parts of Tihany at your own pace.
Balatonfüred and the Tagore Promenade

Balatonfüred has long been connected with Hungarian cultural life, summer holidays and the traditional atmosphere of the lake. Historic villas, cafés, boats, seasonal flowers and the tree-lined Tagore Promenade create a very different feeling from the busy streets of Budapest.
I show you where the promenade begins and point out the main places of interest before giving you time to explore independently. The lakeside area is straightforward, pedestrian-friendly and almost impossible to get lost in.
A walk along the promenade is an easy and enjoyable part of the day. You can watch the boats, enjoy the fresh air and see why Balatonfüred has remained one of Hungary’s best-known lakeside destinations for generations.
This can also be a pleasant place for coffee, cake or a simple Hungarian treat such as freshly prepared lángos or kürtőskalács.
Optional Lunch in a Traditional Hungarian Countryside Restaurant
If you would like to include lunch, we can stop at a traditional Hungarian countryside restaurant or csárda.
This adds another local dimension to the journey and gives you the opportunity to try Hungarian dishes outside the more tourist-focused parts of Budapest. Depending on your appetite, we can choose a full traditional meal or keep lunch lighter so that the day continues comfortably.
Lunch is not included in the tour price, which allows you to choose freely from the menu according to your preferences.
Szigliget Castle and One of the Best Views over Lake Balaton

The medieval castle stands on a volcanic hill and offers one of the most impressive panoramic views in the entire region. From the upper sections of the ruins, you can see Lake Balaton, the surrounding hills, vineyards and countryside stretching into the distance.
Reaching the castle requires an uphill walk. The path is easy to follow, but it becomes quite steep in places. This is the part of the day where I walk with you. We take it slowly, stop whenever needed and keep each other motivated on the way up.
The climb is not technically difficult, but it does require a reasonable level of mobility and comfortable shoes. The panorama from the top is an excellent reward for the effort.
Szigliget is not simply an attractive photo stop. The castle connects the landscape with Hungarian history and gives the day a memorable final highlight.
Optional entry fee: ~EUR 7/person
Why Tihany, Balatonfüred and Szigliget Work So Well Together

This itinerary instead focuses on three places that complement each other:
- Tihany provides history, village atmosphere and panoramic lake views.
- Balatonfüred offers an elegant promenade and the classic Hungarian lakeside experience.
- Szigliget adds medieval history and a dramatic panorama over the landscape.
The ferry crossing from Szántód also makes the route more interesting. Instead of following the same roads in both directions, the day begins with a drive to the southern shore and a scenic crossing directly to the Tihany Peninsula.
The result is a varied full-day experience without trying to squeeze too many distant stops into the itinerary.

Lake Balaton by Private Car or Public Transport?

These destinations are spread across the region, and public transport would require several connections, local buses or taxis. A private car allows the different stops to fit together naturally and saves valuable time during the day.
The car also travels with us on the ferry, so we can continue directly from Tihany toward Balatonfüred and Szigliget without needing to organise further transportation after the crossing.
You also have the freedom to spend more time in a place you particularly enjoy, take an additional photo stop or adjust the timing if lunch takes a little longer than expected.
Lake Balaton or the Danube Bend?
Lake Balaton and the Danube Bend are two of the most rewarding countryside day trips from Budapest, but they offer very different experiences.
The Danube Bend is centred on monumental history, medieval castles, the River Danube and towns such as Esztergom, Visegrád and Szentendre. Lake Balaton feels more open and relaxed, with a ferry crossing, lakeside promenades, historic villages, countryside scenery and the panoramic climb to Szigliget Castle.
If you enjoy river landscapes, basilicas and medieval history, the Danube Bend may be the stronger choice. If you are looking for a relaxed full day combining lake views, small-town atmosphere and beautiful countryside, Lake Balaton is an excellent alternative.
A Separate Lake Balaton Experience for Wine Lovers

Returning to Budapest
After visiting Szigliget Castle, we begin the comfortable drive back to Budapest.
The exact return time depends on traffic, lunch, the ferry schedule and how long you choose to spend at the different stops, but the aim is to arrive back in Budapest during the evening without making the day feel rushed.
You will be dropped off directly at your hotel or accommodation.
